Today I use a pc the laptop Im working with now is an Hp I've had it for about 2 years ,good processor,hd screen 17 inches ,I have not bought a monitor calibrator but for the most part I can tell everything on my screen comes out a bit too blue-ish for those using a mac or a higher calibrated monitor my images often come out to red-ish. While I was taking a short courses in graphic design we used macs and honestly it was my first time seeing all my artwork on a huge mac screen.I could tsee all the mistakes that had been made on my previous works..embarrassing! Still I decided to use my home pc but when I went to school I would finish touching up my images on the mac. The way i chose to edit images was very odd actually and an unusual method, i have a bad habit of experimenting. there would be more variations in color than what I was actually seeing on the pc. What I thought was really black was actually brown, dark gray etc, just total cluster really.
I understand that the mac monitors are very high calibrated and If i could afford one at this point (which I cant) I wouldn't have to question how the colors on my screen differed from what others saw. If I could go back in time I would put money towards maybe a better setup but lets face it I don't do this professionally this is a hobby Ive maybe made about $800 total for my photog work haha . I dont mind printing out my works to see how they look and I dont mind asking a friend who owns a mac to take a look at it just to see if the colors look off. lately Ive considered trying to make photography into a job because this is what i like to do and I cannot survive without my art, it just so happens relies heavily on the digital market. What to do what to do. I would enjoy peoples opinions about this. Will I eventually have to cough up 1,000's of dollars if I wanted people to take my work more seriously? I hope not.
Ive seen lots of great works and it was done on a pc,but its not like thats the first thing I think about when I see someones images either. Why I feel the way I do is people Ive run into have looked down on my work, because of not using a mac. pieces that I spent hours on . I didnt undertand why they cared so much. SAIC a major art school here in Chicago forces you to buy a mac it is part of your tuition when you join the school! I went to another college for a tour and the guide had taken a look at my work, said how much he liked it but also had to add how surprised he was I wasn't creating all these images with a mac like as if a pc wasnt capable of creating works of art It was like someone handing me an award for my work and then just dismissing it nd saying"oh never mind" because of the "tools" you use we don't like it.My boyfriend made a good point that if photography is just art all the rockstarr brand name equipment shouldnt matter and hes right it shouldnt. I hate when people brought up my last camera,it was big and bulky but not because I wanted to have a huuge camera just so people could like and respect me,the camera was practically handed to me because my photography mentor thought it would serve my purpose well. and thats it! but when i went anywhere with it people assumed i was trying to show off,a guy came up to me with a super tiny pentax camera and was like ..look you dont need a large camera to take good images ,Honestly I just wanted to hit them in the face, the camera practically chose me I didn;t chose it lol. Anywhoo I dont even own a camera/lenses right now because I'm trying to decide once again what is the best route for me and my purpose I would like to take on doing video which my old camera didnt do but I weigh in the idea of just getting an actual real video camera eventually might be a good idea too. Sorry this has become a very long drawn out story Im done ranting. Lesson im trying to express is you should never judge someone by the tools they use and anyone who does really just comes off sounding like an elitist stuck up prick,if whats working for someone is working and they arent any noticeable problems then let them be,dont try to convince them to upgrade to a mac, thats not truly appreciating art orwhat people create with their times itsjust appreciating who has done something the best and with what kind of equipment is the most popular Im sure there are computers/monitors that can do the same thing as a mac and I dont want young artists who cant afford some expensive setup to feel discouraged and think their work is any less. cause its not.
